Being a Superwoman

Posted July 30th, 2008 by Sophia

I was listening to Rabbi Shmuley on the radio this morning. He was talking about women who try to be perfect (i.e. the “Superwoman”). His essential advice was to “stop trying to be perfect”. I took this very much to heart, especially considering…

Food for a 1-Year-Old

Posted July 28th, 2008 by Sophia

Charlie is 1-year-old now. Mealtimes have become much more difficult. My little one is forming his own opinions and sharing them quite openly with me. If he sees a spoon filled with baby food moving toward his mouth, he swats it away with contempt (splattering it all over the place).

He only wants to eat what I’m eating.

“What’s that?” he asks, when…

That One “Perfect” Mommy

Posted July 22nd, 2008 by Sophia

We all know her. She can juggle three kids in her arms while cooking a fully organic meal (with food she grew in her garden) and sewing every outfit her children wear from organic cotton she grew and picked herself. She runs a full-time business out of her home while she home schools her children. She can afford any luxury because she only buys groceries with…

Pre-Baby Life vs. Mommy Life

Posted July 17th, 2008 by Sophia

I was almost 35-years-old when I gave birth to Charlie, one year ago. So, I had a lot of years to establish a pre-baby lifestyle. For most of my 20’s, I was attending college and working full-time. I completed a Master’s program and started my career in the Tech World in my late 20’s.

During my entire 20’s and early 30’s, I spent much of my spare time going to the movies, hanging out with friends, going to happy hour, reading books, etc. Every weekend, I would…

Hip X-Rays for a 1-Year-Old?

Posted July 13th, 2008 by Sophia

Charlie had his one year doctor’s appointment on Friday. I was expecting him to get his weight and height percentages, chickenpox vaccine, measles vaccine and tuberculosis test (under the skin). All of those things happened as expected. Charlie is in the 50th percentile for weight at 21 lbs, 5 ozs. He is in the 90th percentile for height at 31 inches long. And his head is well rounded…always in the 50th percentile. Charlie handled the vaccines pretty well. I sat on the table holding him in my arms. The nurse was quick with the needle. Charlie shed a few tears and then he was done. (I wanted to shed a few tears but I held it together.) At this point, things turned in a less than expected direction. The doctor asked if Charlie was…

The Art of Stepmothering

Posted July 3rd, 2008 by Sophia

I tend to think of stepmothering as an art I have yet to master. There are so many fine lines I’m not supposed to cross, don’t feel comfortable crossing…

Kids Say the Darndest Things

Posted June 29th, 2008 by Sophia

The other day, Savannah (my 7-year-old stepdaughter) explained to me why pregnant women are so hungry all the time:
“The baby eats all the food the mommy eats becauseĀ he doesn’t want to beĀ sitting next to a bunch of poop. Because when you eat it turns into poop and then the baby would have to be right [...]

Being a Motherless Mommy

Posted June 29th, 2008 by Sophia

First, I would like to acknowledge that my mother is still alive. However, my relationship with her has been severely strained since I was a kid. I can understand, if you are a mommy who has lost her mother due to her passing, that you may not consider my situation to be nearly as dire, [...]
