Jake says his first sentence!
Every new milestone that you reach with baby is so exciting, especially if you have a child with developmental delays. When Jake was 15 months old, he was diagnosed with craniosynostosis. You’re probably thinking the same thing I was..cranio-what?! It’s a condition where the bones in his skull start to fuse to early causing inter-cranial pressure. The pressure build-up was beginning to affect his optic nerve and his vision and needed surgery to correct. To make a long story short, he had a craniotomy procedure at the local Children’s Hospital which was successful. However, as a result of the down time from the surgery, he has some delays. At first it was physical therapy for his large motor skills, then came occupational therapy for his fine motor skills, and after that came speech therapy. Since then, he is caught up in large motor skills and has graduated from physical therapy. However, he still goes to speech and o.t. (occupational therapy) once a week. Jake has been making a lot of great progress with therapy in both. Most of his communication consists of 1-2 word combos (i.e. eat food, walk out, etc.) In recent days, he has been doing a lot of 2-word combos and the quality of his pronunciation has been improving. So I guess I should not have been too surprised this morning when he nudged me to wake up by pushing my iPod against the palm of my hand asking, “Mama…more manonna..pleesh” (translation: “Momma, more Madonna please”) Not necessarily my dream choice of words for a first sentence, but I’ll take it! So we started off this morning dancing to “4 Minutes”. Rock on, Jake!

Way to go Jake! And don’t worry, Mels - I’m sure his musical tastes will improve with age.
