Flex Sigamajig

Posted July 11th, 2008 by Melinda

I tried eating low-carb in an effort to lose the extra pounds. It was a diet that I had great success with before I was pregnant. However, nowadays, I noticed that when I go on a low-carb diet, I have constipation problems. At first it was just going number 2 every 4-5 days. But, then I noticed some bleeding after going to the bathroom. So I talked to my doctor about it and she referred me to a gastroenterologist. I had my visit with the gastroenterologist and he suggests performing a flex sigmoidoscopy. The flex-sig procedure allows the doctor to look into the lower colon to check for polyps and other abnormalities. He gave me a sheet of instructions on how to prepare. The prep involves taking some laxatives and an anema at the end. At first, I was worried about the prep as well as the procedure. However, the prep work was very “refreshing”. I don’t think I ever had a colon quite so clean in ages. The flex sig procedure itself was very quick, took about 15 minutes and I was able to see on a monitor screen what the camera was looking at inside my lower colon. It was actually very educational. In the end, everything checked out ok, I just have hemorrhoids, which fortunately I can manage by making changes to my diet. I can go back to low-carb, but I must add more fiber to my diet. All in all, the flex sig was not as scary as I thought it would be. Now I am going to enjoy my beef salad.

I am so glad everything turned out okay! When I was pregnant and I had Gestational Diabetes and I had to go on a very low carb diet and had the same problem you did. I had to buy some metamucil to help. Low carb works! In general I think we all eat too many bready and sugary things. It’s hard to cut down. French toast is so good!
