Wipeout - My New Favorite Show

Posted June 24th, 2008 by Sophia

If you didn’t watch ABC’s Wipeout tonight, you missed a hilarious new show. The basic idea is to take various types of people and have them compete for $50,000 by running an obstacle course. But, this is a course full of obstacles that can’t help but make everyone look like idiots (e.g. big HUGE balls, sucker punch, tons of mud, dizzy dummy, etc.).

  • The Sweeper - Perched on a pole, contestants must jump over a rotating arm that gets faster and higher until it knocks them over. (Reality Competition Wipeout…)
  • Dizzy Dummy - Six people get strapped to a spinning mechanism and then run a short course. (Reality Competition Wipeout…)
  • Sucker Punch - It’s like Whack-a-Mole if the mole were doing the whacking: Contestants run along a wall from which fists pop out and sucker-punch them. (Reality Competition Wipeout…)
  • The Cookie Cutter - Contestants had to swing on a long rope and hit a padded object on top of a platform with a man shaped “cookie cutter” piece in the middle (that could punch out if hit correctly) allowing the contestant to break through.

“The time-honored tradition of watching people falling down is always funny,” says Wipeout host John Henson, a 20-year comic vet best known as host of E!’s Talk Soup. “And it’s certainly that tradition that this show is following” (Reality Competition Wipeout…).

John Henson MAKES this show. It’s his running commentary that keeps you laughing. Here are a few of his remarks:

  • As the Go-Go dancing blonde contenstant stopped for a moment to catch her breath, John said, “stopping for a moment to collect her thought”. And when she did well he said, “You go-go girl.”
  • As the male jazz dancer tried to make his way across the Sucker Punch, John said, “5, 6, 7, 8.”
  • As a contestant did a face plant trying to avoid The Sweeper, John said, “literally kissing the $50 grand goodbye.”
  • As the show ended, John said, “Good night and big balls.”

Funniest moment: When the go-go dancing blonde was cheering about one of the contestents getting knocked off his platform by The Sweeper, it came around and knocked her off mid-cheer. :-)

Check it out!
