$4.39 a Gallon and Rising

Posted June 10th, 2008 by Sophia

This evening, I paid $53 for a little over HALF a tank of gas (regular unleaded)! Holy Crap! My current car gets between 15-17 miles per gallon. That’s terrible. What was I thinking? Probably about how much room it has and how nice the stereo system sounded as I sat in the leather seats back in March 2000. How drastically my world has changed. I now have two kids and fuel costs through the roof! Listening to loud music in my comfy leather seats is a thing of the past.

I am starting to seriously consider one of those Smart Cars (i.e. Smart ForTwo — http://www.smartusa.com/). Too bad they’re not exactly family friendly, with two doors and enough room for two small people or one very large person. I’m guessing my son’s car seat wouldn’t be a comfortable accessory. There was actually a Smart ForFour built between 2004 and 2006 but it was dropped due to poor sales. However, the price of fuel has changed that reality dramatically. In fact, the preorder sales for the Smart ForTwo (you can register on the above website for $99) have apparently beat expectations. Mercedes officials are suddenly thinking it’s time to bring back the ForFour (http://www.motorauthority.com/news/hatchbacks/comeback-planned-for-smart-forfour/). Surprise, surprise!

The Smart ForTwo gets a reported 33 - 41 miles per gallon (http://www.fueleconomy.gov/Feg/bymodel/2008_smart_fortwo.shtml). However, there is some controversy concerning the accuracy of this rate.

Dreading the next fill up!
